The folk tale about the Little Humpbacked Horse is well-known
and has a few variations, but each one has the same storyline. The best known
version was written in the first half of the 19th century by poet Yershov, who
adopted this Siberian folk tale and transformed it into a charming poem. The
poem became very popular and had been published seven times during Yershov's
life. Nowadays it still remains one of the most beloved fairy tales. It tells
us about an unusual friendship between Ivan, the youngest son of a farmer, and
a fantastic creature -- a Little Humpbacked Hourse with long ears and enourmous
stregth. Being a wonderful friend the Little Humpbacked Horse helps Ivan with
all his problems. Ivan wanted to get just a feather of a Firebird that would
bring him good luck. Instead he got the Firebird itself and a beautiful bride.

Lacquer boxes from Palekh might
well enjoy the highest world-wide acclaim. The lacquer art of Palekh has
been called "a small miracle", a label
particularly fitting since that the village specialized in icon-painting for
centuries until the 1917 Russian revolution. To many collectors, Palekh boxes
have the most elegant look to them. When you hold one in your hand, you know
you are holding something truly special. Most often in Palekh works, innumerable
fine lines of gold leaf, polished to a glow by a wolf's tooth, are applied
to the ornamental border and drawing itself. A simple one-color background
then provides a beautiful contrast to the gold leaf and scene itself. This
background, usually black, also serves to take the observer into a new world
where one's concept of time and space is left to the imagination.
