The village of Kholui, began painting lacquer miniatures in the 1930's. Kholui
artists are less bound to tradition or one particular style, unlike the other
villages, and seem to take a bolder approach to their works. Backgrounds for
Kholui works are occasionally one solid color (similar to Palekh), but more
often than not the artist fills this area with swirls of tone and shade. Partly
for this reason, Kholui works appear brighter than Palekh boxes and seem to
fill up more of the available space.
Amazing details of this box, bright golden tones of Kholui
attracts attention immideately. This box returns us to pagan times of young
Russia when peopleworshiped the main God --Yarilo (Sun) This very old fairy
tale (Snowmaiden) is one of the most popular in Russia. For many opera lovers
this tale is known as Rimsky-Korsakov's opera "Snegurochka" (1881).
Lel, a skilful horn player and a shepherd, was the first person who met Snowmaiden,
the daughter of Father Frost and Spring, when she came to live among the common
people. Lel became her real friend.
